HISTORICAL CONTEXT
22nd Dragoons were equipped with Sherman flail tanks which were used to clear minefields and help create routes that other vehicles could use to exit the beach. Troops from the regiment landed on two different beaches around H-Hour on D-Day.
'B' Squadron landed on Mike sector, Juno Beach, while 'A' Squadron and two troops of 'C' Squadron landed on Queen White and Queen Red sectors, Sword Beach. He was commanding one Troop of 'C' Squadron and landed at Sword Beach.
Next the unit headed inland to continue supporting the infantry. He was killed a couple of hours after landing when his tank was hit in the turret by a German anti-tank gun.
