HISTORICAL CONTEXT
2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders had been fighting in Normandy since 20 June 1944. On the previous day the battalion had occupied Louviers, Eure and were now making an attack across the River Seine.
However, they met fierce German resistance as they made the crossing in assault boats. The first four boats were destroyed by machine gun fire. It is presumed he was killed during this engagement.
