HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Nottinghamshire (Sherwood Rangers) Yeomanry, Royal Armoured Corps landed on D-Day on Jig Green sector, Gold Beach. 'B' and 'C' Squadrons of this regiment were equipped with Sherman DD amphibious tanks, which were to be launched at sea and to swim the last distance to the beach under their own power.
They were intended to land around H-Hour in support of the assault infantry. However on the day, due to rough weather most of these tanks were launched much closer to the shore than originally planned, and reached the beach about half an hour later than planned.
He was part of one of the tank crews but was killed by machine gun fire as he landed.
