HISTORICAL CONTEXT
The Pioneer Corps were used for light engineering tasks under the supervision of the Royal Engineers, facilitated logistical work and, if necessary, joined the assault forces in the battle.
149 Company, Pioneer Corps was part of 6 Beach Group, 101 Beach Sub-Area, Sword Beach in the assault phase of the Battle of Normandy.
The company landed in the morning on D-Day but the exact circumstances of his death are not known. There is no known place of burial for him so he is commemorated on the Bayeux Memorial to the Missing, Calvados.
