HISTORICAL CONTEXT
1/7th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 59th Division landed in Normandy on 29 June 1944. Their first engagement for the battalion was on 8 July 1944 when they were sent to capture the village of St Contest on the opening day of Operation Charnwood.
The fighting was hard as they were up against 25th SS Panzergrenadier Regiment, 12th SS Panzer Division who had occupied the area for a month so had had time to prepare their defence positions. Despite heavy losses the battalion reached their objective by 18:30. He is presumed to have been killed during the fighting.
