HISTORICAL CONTEXT

4 Commando, part of 1st Special Service Brigade, disembarked from HM Princess Astrid and SS Maid of Orleans and landed from about 08:00 on Queen Red sector, Sword Beach.

Their main task was to capture the German gun battery at Ouistreham but before that they helped secure the casino. Some men were killed as they landed on the beach, some were killed due to sniping and mortar fire as they made their way towards the battery.

Others were killed as they assaulted the battery due to the stiff resistance of the German troops. Once the battery had been captured the commandos walked nine miles to the bridges on the River Orne and Caen Canal.

They dug in for the night around the hamlet of Hauger but the exact circumstances of his death are not known.
