HISTORICAL CONTEXT

C Squadron, Inns of Court Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps was part of 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. They embarked from Portsmouth on 4 June, 1944 with a number of Royal Engineers.

The squadron was tasked to destroy bridges over the River Orne between Thury Harcourt and Saint-André-sur-Orne in order to delay German counter attacks west of Caen as well as carry out general reconnaissance.

They landed on Mike Green sector, Juno Beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer over a period of time from 07:45 but congestion getting off the beach and German opposition slowed them down and they were unable to achieve their objective on D-Day.

He was killed by friendly fire when an Allied tank fired on what he believed were German vehicles.
