HISTORICAL CONTEXT

6 Commando embarked at Warsash on 5 June, 1944 and landed at intervals on Queen Red sector, Sword Beach from 08:40 on D-Day.

They advanced to Le Plein, taking a German battery en route, before crossing the River Orne and Caen Canal at Bénouville and continuing through to Breville.

Heavy casualties were incurred there due to sustained mortar fire from a German gun site located just outside Breville shortly after they arrived so they withdrew. The circumstances of his death are not known.
