HISTORICAL CONTEXT

1st Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment (Prince of Wales' Volunteers) landed on Queen sector, Sword Beach from 07:25 onwards on D-Day. The troops faced severe opposition on the beach, and suffered losses as they cleared the seafront houses and the German strongpoint codenamed 'Cod'.

The battalion then advanced to Hermanville-sur-Mer where it remained for the rest of the day and consolidated the area. The exact circumstances of his death are unknown.
