HISTORICAL CONTEXT

4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards, Royal Armoured Corps landed at intervals from about 07:25 on D-Day, on King Green and King Red sectors, Gold Beach.

Two of the regiment's squadrons ('B' and 'C' Squadrons) were equipped with Sherman DD amphibious tanks, which were launched at sea and swam the last distance to the beach under their own power.

They were supporting the assaulting infantry: 'B' Squadron supported 6th Battalion, Green Howards, and 'C' Squadron supported 5th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. 'A' Squadron had standard Sherman tanks and landed about an hour later in support of 7th Battalion, Green Howards.

The regiment experienced some trouble in getting off the beach but then advanced to La Rivière and pushed inland from there. German opposition was mainly in isolated pockets and snipers. The exact circumstances of his death are unknown.
