A keen sportsman, Richard Davis was a talented golfer and excelled at boxing. He joined the army in the early 1930s and boxed for his battalion – the 2nd Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers. As a reservist, Richard re-joined the Royal Welch Fusiliers at the outbreak of the Second World War and was posted to the 4th Battalion.
In November 1939, he married his sweetheart, Betty, at St David’s Methodist Church in Craig-y-Don, Llandudno. On 18th June 1944, D-Day +12, Serjeant Davis and the 4th Battalion left Britain for Normandy and were soon in action around Caen and Evrecy. On 14th August 1944, Richard was on patrol with two other non-commissioned officers to reconnoitre enemy positions in a village forward of his company. He was killed in action and buried at Banneville-le-Campagne War Cemetery.
