Alexander Campbell

Remembering Alexander Campbell, killed in action, 18th July, 1944. He was was son of James and Jane Campbell, of Kingussie born on 4th May 1915 at Drumguish, Kingussie. His father was a ploughman. His parents James Campbell and Jane Ross were married at Loch Ussie, Fodderty on 25th May 1906.
In the 1921 Census Alexander was living at Ruthven with his parents and their ten children, including Alexander, in a house with four rooms. His father was described as a horseman.
Alexander landed in Normandy on 7 June 1944 (D-Day +1). He died north east of Caen during Operation Goodwood. The 5th Cameron Highlanders were part of the 51st Highland Division. He was initially buried at Colleville and reburied on 11 June 1945 at Ranville British Military Cemetery.
His grave has the Family inscription:
A LOVING SON
A BROTHER DEAR
HIS MEMORY WILL LINGER
WITH US WHO LOVE HIM DEAR
News about his death was published in the Inverness Courier of 22 August 1944 and also the Northern Chronicle of 23 August 1944. From this we find out that before the war, he was employed by Messrs Balfour Beatty and Co.
